Painting statement
My paintings investigate ideas of monumentality through the geometries of prehistoric archaeological sites. They also attempt to expand temporal boundaries by linking both deep time human-made forms and mythic narratives with contemporary painting. Through color, texture, patterns of entoptic phenomena, and references to stratigraphic drawing employed in archaeological documentation, my work examines how lithic shapes can occupy pictorial space in compelling ways within an abstract language. In addition to shape, color plays a major role in creating structure and organizing space within my paintings. Where the built environment meets the natural world in the context of a wonder discourse is also central to my work; thus, I use hardedge forms to reinterpret tumbles of stones at Neolithic sites as a composition of texture/color upon a vibrant ground, while color schemes allude to changing light in rural areas where these stones are found. Ultimately, the work invites the viewer to read deeply and consider the meaning and politics of monument building and myth along the human journey.
